The AI Landscape Map

A one-page map of the four kinds of AI you will meet at work, from analytical to agentic, and how your job changes at each layer.

The four kinds of AI you will actually meet at work, and what your job becomes at each.

You learned AI as a chatbot. That is one layer of four. These layers do not replace each other in a line. They stack and run at the same time, often in one afternoon, and your role moves up toward judgment at every one.

The four layers

Analytical AI. The silent models scoring and sorting under your tools: lead scoring, fraud flags, recommendations. Your job is to question the output you did not generate.

Generative AI. The chatbot you know. Your job is to direct it well, then verify what comes back, because the output looks finished whether or not it is correct.

Agentic AI. AI that takes actions, not just drafts. Your job is to supervise: set the boundaries before it runs, check the trail after.

The open frontier. Reasoners and beyond, genuinely debated, no agreed timeline. Your job is to stay adaptable and bet your skills on no single prediction.

The constant across all four

At every layer, the human check is the job. The form of the check changes. The presence of it never does. For the full argument, read You Learned AI as a Chatbot, or pair this with the Task Spec Quick-Start.
