The “When Not to Use AI” Gate

Five stop-and-think triggers where the professional move is to close the AI tool, not open it. Judgment over automation.

Five moments where the professional move is to close the tool, not open it.

AI fluency is not about using AI for everything. It is about judgment. These are the five triggers where you stop, think, and often choose the human path.

The five triggers

High and irreversible stakes. If being wrong is expensive and cannot be quietly fixed, the AI draft is a starting point at best.

Data that should not leave the building. No policy naming the risk does not remove the risk.

Output you cannot verify. If you cannot check it, you cannot responsibly ship it.

Judgment that is the point. When the thinking is the deliverable, outsourcing it defeats the task.

Work that must sound like you. The final words, and the accountability for them, are yours.

The rule

Using AI well includes knowing when not to. Read You’re Not Joining a Finished System and When Not to Use AI at Work for the full treatment.
